Suspect arrested after deadly shooting in north Charlotte

The shooting happened on West Sugar Creek Road on Monday evening.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman was killed and a man was injured in a shooting on West Sugar Creek Road near Interstate 85 in north Charlotte Monday evening, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a reported shooting along West Sugar Creek Road near a McDonald's just before 5 p.m. on Monday. When officers arrived, they found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both people were rushed to the hospital, where the woman later died. She was identified as 34-year-old Keia Javon Garnett.

CMPD said officers were able to locate a suspect with help from witnesses who saw the shooting. The suspect, 23-year-old Shikeem Sands, was arrested near where the shooting happened. Sands was taken to CMPD headquarters in Uptown and was later charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

In August of 2024, Sands pleaded 'guilty' to the charge of second degree murder.

Police said the area has long been considered a hot spot for crime, but over the years CMPD has worked with area merchants and residents to try and reduce violent crime, but they could use more help.

"It takes more than just the police coming out here... patrolling through here, but it also takes those phone calls from citizens if they see something that's actually going on," CMPD Maj. Torri Tellis said.
