High-speed chase ends with crash after teen eludes officers for 20 miles

The suspect was clocked going 102 mph in a 50 mph zone, according to Newton police.

NEWTON, N.C. — An 18-year-old was arrested after an alleged high-speed chase that reached speeds over 100 mph in Catawba County, police said.

Newton Police said an officer was monitoring traffic on U.S. 70 on Friday when a blue Honda Civic sped past at 102 mph in a 50-mph speed zone. The pursuit went 23 miles until the driver, identified as 18-year-old Kasey Dale Mecimore, lost control and crashed into a business on North Carolina 16 in Conover. Mecimore did not suffer any significant injuries and was taken into custody at the scene of the crash. The vehicle was registered to the 18-year-old passenger in the car, who was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and released.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
