RALEIGH, N.C. — The executive director of the Mecklenburg County nonprofit A Place for Heroes has been arrested on felony tax charges, which were filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Lancaster resident Terri Howard was arrested on Thursday and charged with two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses in relation to filing fraudulent forms and illegally receiving a tax refund of $217,817.44.
The charges allege that Howard filed fraudulent forms claiming that the tax refund amount was paid in sales tax for the nonprofit when the NCDOR says the amount was never paid.
Howard was arrested and placed under a $50,000 secure bond with a first court appearance set for April 8.
