Justice Department investigating Huntersville couple for $2 million in alleged COVID-19 fraud

The couple allegedly lied on loan applications and provided fabricated tax returns and fake bank statements to get the loans, prosecutors say.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Georgia couple was indicted on allegations that they received more than $2 million in fraudulent COVID-19 relief loans while living in the Charlotte area, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Antoine Johnson and Kimberly Maddox, who lived in Huntersville, are accused of receiving approximately $2 million in bank loans and COVID-19 relief loans for their North Carolina business. The Justice Department alleges that the pair, who owned and operated Pick Up and Go Moving International, Inc., lied on loan applications about the company's income, revenue, expenses and employees along with fabricated documents that included fake financial statements and fraudulent tax returns.

Both suspects are charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. If convicted, Johnson and Maddox each face up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

The indictment was announced one day after a Charlotte businessman was sentenced to two years in prison for receiving fraudulent COVID-19 relief loans

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
