CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It was a frightening ordeal for a Charlotte family after a drive-by shooting left a 13-year-old shot in the leg. It happened early Friday morning in northwest Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reports.
According to police, the teen's mother and two other kids, 11 and 1, were in the home at the time of the shooting and were not injured. Police believe this crime was not random.
People who live in the area say they are shocked this happened in their community. They describe the area as pretty quiet.
"It’s laid back. All of the kids play with each other in the cul-de-sac and like I said it's pretty quiet over here," Kisha Poagedowdy said.
She said she was home with her husband who was sleeping when she was startled by the sounds of gunfire.
"I heard shots but they didn’t sound like normal gunshots. It sounded like something underwater and it was several shots that rung out," Poagedowdy said.
The home was covered in bullet holes. They can be seen through a cracked window and the windshield of a car parked in the driveway.
Neighbors say they are concerned about their safety and are on high alert.
"I contemplated for us to come outside and play but not knowing what exactly is going on... I probably won’t be doing that today," Poagedowdy said. "It’s too close to home. For his [her grandson's] protection and ours, I probably won’t be out too much here this week.”
"It doesn’t make everybody feel safe around here," Sharon Dye said. "I like to feel safe in my community. I like to be able to come outside and feel like I can have peace without having to look over my shoulder."
