CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A shooting that unfolded in Charlotte Thursday evening involved an officer.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared an initial alert about the shooting to X around 7 p.m. Officers said it happened along West Sugar Creek Road near the on-ramps to I-85.
While initial details were not immediately available, Medic confirmed it responded, but deferred further details to CMPD. CMPD did note that preliminary details suggest the officers were not injured.
In a later update, CMPD provided more details.
The department said officers were patrolling in the area when they saw a suspect, known to them as a convicted felon preciously convicted of murder and attempted murder, with a gun. Officers then struggled with the suspect and one officer reportedly believed the suspect posed a deadly threat.
That officer then fired his service gun, striking the suspect. CMPD said it ended up finding a total of two guns in the suspect's possession.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment with life-threatening injuries.
The CMPD officer involved is now on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting it, while CMPD's Internal Affairs division leads its own parallel investigation.
The officer has not been identified as of publication.
