CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officers responded to the pool at an apartment complex near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte after receiving numerous calls of shots being fired, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The incident was in the 10900 block of Education Way, which is near North Tryon Street and East Mallard Creek Church Road and just blocks away from UNCC.
CMPD said the victim was shot while at the pool, and was already being transported by the hospital by friends or associates prior to CMPD arriving.
The victim has serious, possibly life-threatening injuries, CMPD said. Police said Tuesday that the victim is expected to live.
CMPD says they believe multiple shooters were involved. Investigators expressed frustration about the lack of cooperation they were getting on the case.
“200 people in a pool, very few witnesses, let that sink in. Four different type rounds, four different caliber weapons fired into a crowd of over 200 people and not many witnesses who want to tell their story,” said CMPD Major Dave Robinson at a news conference. "Is that a matter of trust of the police department or just apathy?”
At this point, CMPD is working on locating witnesses to determine a motive and gather any suspect information. No arrests have been made.
"I work at night so I don't feel safe at all," said Makenzie Postma, a resident at The Flats at Mallard Creek. "Loud parties, music you can hear probably to the street so I'm not surprised that this happened."
Crime scene tape and shattered glass from stray bullets now a reminder of the incident.
"Something needs to be done, but I do not want to live here anymore," said Postma.
