Parents admitted to injecting fentanyl while in bed with infant, deputies say

The baby was given Narcan before getting taken to the hospital, investigators said.

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — The parents of a Rowan County baby who went into cardiac arrest took fentanyl while in bed with the child over the weekend, deputies say.

A North Carolina state trooper responded to a 911 call on Sides Road for a child who was unconscious and not breathing. When the trooper arrived, he met a woman who came running out of a camper with the 11-month-old in her arms. The trooper immediately administered CPR until paramedics arrived and took over life-saving measures, including the use of Narcan.

The child was taken to a children's hospital for treatment.

Jamie Robertson told investigators she fixed her daughter a bottle. Robertson then said she, her daughter and James Danielson fell asleep in the bed. Robertson called 911 when she awoke to her daughter gasping for air and struggling to breathe.

Detectives found unsanitary conditions inside the camper with drug paraphernalia, drug residue and uncapped syringes scattered. Robertson and Danielson allegedly admitted to injecting fentanyl while in bed with the child before falling asleep.

Danielson and Robertson were arrested and charged with felony neglect child abuse-serious bodily injury and possession of drug paraphernalia. They were each given a $100,000 bond.

The Department of Social Services is investigating the case. The child was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
