YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff's Office said a man was seen stealing a gun at a golf course on Wednesday.
Deputies were called to Tuckaway Road in southeast York County after employees at the Pinetuck Golf Course said they saw a man steal a firearm and run away to a home nearby.
Around 10 p.m., the sheriff's office tweeted that deputies had been trying to make contact with the person for hours.
Officials later identified Matthew Scott Brown as the suspect in this case. The sheriff's office said Brown had just gotten out of jail a day earlier for serving time on a burglary case at a house on Pinetuck Lane. The incident report accuses him of stealing tools on November 6, 2022.
An employee at Pinetuck said Brown was a former employee at the golf course and was allowed to stay at a trailer near their maintenance shed until he was arrested last November. He told WCNC Charlotte he called 9-1-1 around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday night after seeing Brown take the gun from the office in the clubhouse and run off.
Employees also said they saw Brown on one of the golf course's golf carts earlier in the day and told him to return it. However, as of Thursday morning, the golf cart was still unaccounted for.
Early Thursday morning, York County deputies said Brown was still unaccounted for.
One neighbor told WCNC Charlotte she knows Brown and said he may be headed to Florida where is from originally.
Brown is described as standing at 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, with hazel eyes and brown hair. Deputies said his last known location was at Tuckaway Road in Rock Hill.
