PINEVILLE, N.C. — A man is in jail and facing charges after allegedly assaulting a woman on a Pineville greenway Monday afternoon.
A woman contacted police around 2 p.m. on Monday to report an assault on the greenway between Leitner Drive and Centrum Park in Pineville, according to a release from the Pineville Police Department.
The woman told police she was jogging when a man grabbed her, slammed her to the ground and pinned her down. She was able to escape after she said she kicked the man off of her. She then ran away to call for help, according to police.
Tyrone Duncan, 28, from South Carolina, was arrested and charged with assault on a female and possession of methamphetamine. Duncan appeared in court Tuesday and was given a $5,000 secured bond. He has since been released.
People who use the greenway and spoke to WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker on Tuesday said there needs to be more safety protocols on the trails.
Donald Robinson rides his bike there multiple times a week and said there are blind spots.
“Maybe they need to have panic buttons," Robinson suggested. "Just good public access points.
Many greenways do not have cameras and many people who talked to WCNC Charlotte said they'd like to see more.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department suggested if you are on the greenway, have someone with you and always keep your phone handy. The department also suggested using your phone to share your location with a friend or family member.
WCNC Charlotte spoke with the victim. She said she was not ready to talk publicly because of the impact the experience made. She did say more should be done to ensure safety.
