KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A day after a large police presence in Cabarrus County was observed by WCNC Charlotte, deputies have shared that they had arrested a pair of suspects who reportedly tried to rob an armored truck.
Numerous law enforcement officers were seen Thursday near the intersection of Route 29 and Mount Olivet Road, which is about half a mile north of Interstate 85.
While the investigation was happening south of Kannapolis in Cabarrus County, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office and China Grove Police Department were among the agencies involved in the investigation.
On Friday, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office shared more details.
Deputies said they responded to a Five Below store on Tingle Drive in Salisbury for the suspicious person call. While en route, they were later told two suspects were spotted outside the store wearing hoodies with the word "security" printed on them with an armored Brinks security truck nearby. However, the driver of the truck was in the store and standing by.
The sheriff's office said the first deputy at the scene saw the suspects standing near the truck with their hands in their pockets. They then started walking away when the deputy got out of his patrol car and called out to them. Eventually, they ran and got into a gold-colored Nissan Altima, driving away.
Shortly after, the sheriff's office said China Grove Police saw the suspect car and gave chase. Eventually, the car stopped on Mount Olivet Road in Kannapolis and three suspects got out to run away. Two of them were arrested: 25-year-old Raymond Tino and 26-year-old Devonte Scott.
While being taken to jail, deputies said Tino started hitting the cage in the patrol car, damaging it. His charges include:
- Resisting a public officer
- Damage to property
- Conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon
Tino is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Deputies note a search of the car turned up a Glock handgun.
Tino was granted a $75,000 bond on Friday, while Scott was granted a $275,000 bond.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
