ROCK HILL, S.C. — A person is in custody after a bank robbery and a shooting involving Rock Hill police officers.

Officers in the Millwood Shopping Center saw a man on a bicycle matching the suspect description given by those at the scene, and police said when officers tried to stop him, he got off the bicycle and showed a gun. At this point, Rock Hill police said officers fired their guns and hit the person in the hand. He then dropped his gun and fell to the ground.

The suspect, who was identified as the suspect in the PNC Bank robbery, was taken to a nearby medical center to be treated, then released for jail. His gun and the money taken from the bank were both found at the scene, police said.

No officers were injured, according to the Rock Hill Police Department.

In addition to the Rock Hill Police Department Professional Standards Unit's internal review, the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting since at least one officer was involved. SLED confirmed on Tuesday it had launched its investigation.

SLED also said the shooting in Rock Hill was the 37th officer-involved shooting in the state so far in 2023, and the first one for the Rock Hill Police Department. SLED said last year, there were 32 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina, with none of them involving Rock Hill Police.
