Man charged with secret peeping at UNC Charlotte

Investigators allege the suspect hid in the bathroom and took photos of women while they used the restroom on Oct. 30.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges after detectives alleged he took photos of women in the restroom at UNC Charlotte.

Luke Castaneros, 18, was charged with felony secret peeping in connection with the Oct. 30 incident. Castaneros is accused of using his phone to record women in a bathroom at UNC Charlotte. Investigators allege that he hid in the bathroom and took the photos without the victims' consent.

According to a magistrate order obtained by WCNC Charlotte, Castaneros "did so to gratify his sexual desires."

Castaneros was given a $50,000 bond. Jail records show he was released as of Friday morning. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 19. No further details were provided.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
