Push for answers after several storage units fall victim to theft

One man claims over tens of thousands of dollars worth of belongings stolen from storage unit

CONCORD, N.C. — There are a lot of questions about how more than a dozen storage units were broken into at a Public Storage in Concord.

According to the incident report, the theft happened in July but one property owner wasn’t alerted about the issue until September.

For Khalid Williams, it’s an experience that still has him in shock. He said,

“This is a first-time experience for me,” Williams said.

Williams paid for and began storing his personal belongings inside a storage unit at Public Storage on Derita Road in early 2023. He stored items that add up to tens of thousands of dollars and others he claims are irreplaceable.

“Being violated and having properties of yours that you've worked hard for, to obtain things that were passed down to you, literally stolen from you,” Williams said.

But he learned earlier this month that several items were taken from his unit.

“I look in the back and the majority of my belongings are missing," Williams said. "The PlayStation, a lot of electronics, collectible baseball cards, all of my clothes, unworn sneakers.”

After talking with managers at the company, he learned the incident happened in July, but he wasn’t made aware until he visited the unit himself in September. He's concerned about how this incident happened and where are the security measures.

“I could tell that they were very specific," Williams said. "They were not pressed for time when they went in there."

Williams is now looking to secure his personal belongings elsewhere.

"Under these circumstances, I would like to obviously move all of my stuff out of there and I requested if they can take into consideration helping me with those expenses,” Williams said.

WCNC Charlotte went to the Public Storage unit and was turned away.  We also called for comment on the matter and haven’t heard back.
