Sheriff: Man boarded school bus, berated driver

The Union County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man they say berated a bus driver in front of a bus-full of elementary school students.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- A Union County father is facing charges after boarding his daughter's bus full of elementary school children and berating the bus driver.

The whole incident was captured on cell phone video by a student.

The Union County Sheriff's Office arrested and charged 42-year-old Jason Garcia with disorderly conduct on a school bus, and willfully trespassing or impeding the progress of a school bus.

Neighbor and fellow parent Jon Eccelston says he wasn't surprised when his fifth-grade daughter came home and told him what had happened. He says this isn't the first time they've had issues with this particular bus driver.

"[I've heard from my daughter] that he yells at the kids for no reason, that he threatens the kids, he's threatened to have kids thrown off the bus, things like that," Eccelston said. "It's silly stuff, being a bully."

He says this has been going on for quite some time, and that he and other parents have complained to district officials to no avail.

"I fully understand why the father reacted like that," He said. "You can't jump on the bus and start yelling and cursing with the kids there, but I get the way he felt."

He says when he tried to file a complaint with the school, he was told the transportation department is a separate entity, so the school can't do much about it.

But a quick check of the Union County Schools website shows the buses are operated by the Union County Public Schools Transportation Department.

Now, after all this attention, he just hopes something will be done.

"What would happen that he got that angry, that he got on the bus and lost it like that? That's not a normal reaction," Eccelston said. "So I'd want to know what, maybe, maybe the board of Ed will start looking into it."

NBC Charlotte reached out to Union County Public Schools for comment, but we've yet to hear back since our call was made after business hours.

The Union County Sheriff's Office reminds parents to contact school officials or law enforcement with any school-related concerns.

Garcia is set to appear in court in Monroe on June 14.
