ANSON COUNTY, N.C. -- The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting in which the person shot has died.
The SBI will only say they're investigating an officer-involved shooting on Lower White Store Road in Anson County involving one person and one deputy.
The Sheriff said around 6 p.m. Friday that the subject who was shot by a deputy has died.
The subject, who has been identified as Bobby Rex Horne, was pointing a rifle at deputies when he was shot. SBI agents say that Horne refused to drop his weapon when ordered by deputies, and was shot after raising the rifle toward one of the deputies.
Horne's daughter called EMS when he displayed slurred speech, authorities say, and that's when the subject became combative.
"The captain shielded the wife-- took her across the yard to protect her from the shots," the Sheriff said.
Deputies say they're familiar with the house, which is now blocked off by crime scene tape; they'd been called to the home before for domestic-related incidents.
This marks the third officer-involved shooting in less than a year's time for the department; the Sheriff admits that statistic is too high.
"Every life matters. It's unfortunate circumstances that happened this way-- no deputy, no police officer wants to shoot and kill anybody. My officers in a bad emotional state."
The SBI is investigating and will handle this case moving forward. No names have been released. The deputy is in the hospital with minor injuries and will be on paid leave when released, which is standard procedure.
