Home in quiet Charlotte neighborhood seemingly targeted by gunmen who fired dozens of shots

Surveillance video showed two people getting out of a car and opening fire at a home with four people inside, including a baby.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives are looking for at least two people who shot into a northwest Charlotte home on Sunday.

Four people were inside the house at the time, including a 19-year-old and a baby, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report. It happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on Long Paw Lane, not far from the Pine Island Country Club and West W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Neighbors said the shooting was shocking, not what they'd expect in a quiet neighborhood. Photos and videos indicate the home may have been targeted by the shooters. A car pulled up a few homes down, and two people got out, ran toward the house, and started firing.

"Very loud sound," one neighbor said. "Boom, boom, boom, boom. Then a second time, boom, boom, boom, boom. It happened twice so I suspect it was a gun."

The gunfire was captured by a nearby surveillance camera. Dozens of shots can be heard on the recording.

"I got up and I saw police cars lined up the street," one person said.

More than two dozen evidence markers were on the ground, one for each bullet fired at the house. The front glass door shattered and several more bullet holes were found in the door and windows. Amazingly, no one was hurt during the incident.

"It's very shocking, it is not something you would expect in this neighborhood," resident Andrea Bass said. "It's mainly families and working class. Most people go to work, come home and tend to themselves. You might see kids playing, and that is also really scary because there's a lot of kids in this area."

Safety is now top of mind for neighbors who are facing the scary reality of a shooting that was too close for comfort.

"If something can happen that close, that means it could happen to me," Dionte Gamble said. "Who's to say a bullet doesn't come through their house and hit ours?"

"It makes me worried," Holly Welsh said. "My husband and I have been thinking about moving and things like this make me want to move more."

CMPD hasn't released any suspect information at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. All calls to Crime Stoppers are anonymous.
