ROCK HILL, S.C. — Two Rock Hill sisters have been arrested and accused of neglect, resulting in the death of their mother.
Rock Hill Police responded to a home on Greenwood Lane on Aug. 14, 2023, for a death investigation. Officers and EMS attempted to revive the victim, a 99-year-old woman, but were unable.
Detectives at the scene noted signs of possible neglect that could've led to her death, and her daughters 73-year-old Martha Rutledge and 68-year-old Nancy Rutledge were identified as her caregivers.
After an autopsy and toxicology as part of the investigation, investigators learned the victim died due to a lack of medical care. She had developed a sepsis infection, and bone infections known as acute osteomyelitis due to bed sores.
Martha Rutledge and Nancy Rutledge, both of Rock Hill, were issued warrants for abuse of neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death, and the two turned themselves in on Jan. 19. Both have been served with arrest warrants, and will have a bond hearing at a later date in Rock Hill Municipal Court.
