Student arrested after report of shots fired at SC State University campus; school briefly put on lockdown

The incident occurred around lunchtime Tuesday, February 6.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Police say a report of shots fired fired on the campus of South Carolina State University caused the school -- as well as nearby Claflin University -- to temporarily go into lockdown mode Tuesday afternoon.

The university says around 11:30 a.m., SC State officials closed the campus after reports of a gun fired inside of an academic building. No injuries related to this incident were reported at SC State.

Campus Police arrived at the scene and say they immediately subdued the individual after a short foot chase.

Orangeburg Public Safety officers have now charged 19-year-old Ronaldo J Ifill, of Charleston, with carrying a firearm on school property.

The campus was taken off lockdown at 12:26 p.m.

SC State Campus Police, Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) continue to investigate the incident, and more charges are pending.
