'That is scary': Neighbors react to deadly shooting in southwest Charlotte

A 23-year-old man died when he was shot during an argument in southwest Charlotte on Tuesday, police said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was shot and killed in Charlotte's Steele Creek area on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. along Red Hickory Lane, which is between Steele Creek Road and Sandy Porter Road in southwest Charlotte. When officers arrived in the area, they found 23-year-old Shemar Dealvin Hayes suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMTs, according to Medic.

Witnesses told detectives that they heard a disturbance just before Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers arrived. It appeared that the shooter drove away just before police got to the area. Investigators said they believe the victim and shooter may have known each other and that the preliminary theory is that the shooting was the result of an argument that escalated to shots being fired.

So far, CMPD hasn't made any arrests in the case or publicly identified any suspects. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Charlotte Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

"Every crime we take seriously," Maj. Jonathan Thomas said. "Every homicide, we want to track down the suspects, identify them and bring closure to the families and some justice."
