STATESVILLE, N.C. — A 16-year-old was arrested after a 13-year-old was shot in Statesville Tuesday night, police said.
The incident happened a few minutes before 10 p.m. on Crescent Lane, which is just off U.S. 70 East near the Highland Acres Church of Christ. When officers arrived, they found a 13-year-old who had been shot in the abdomen, according to Statesville Police. The victim was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for treatment.
The 13-year-old's grandmother, Wanda Daye told us she had just left her home to get food for the grandkids when she got the call that her grandson had been shot - in her home.
“I told my granddaughter to lock my door and don’t let anyone in because I know the block has a lot of kids that aren’t right," Daye explained. “Some boy came and asked for some water and he came in and shot my grandson," she continued.
Now she's urging people in the community to help put a stop to the violence.
“Just as well as they came in my house and shot my grandson, they can do anyone. Get your kids," Daye said.
Officers identified the suspect as a 16-year-old, who was taken into custody shortly afterward. The suspect will be charged with attempted murder. Detectives have not identified the suspect.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Statesville Police Department at 704-878-3406.
