STATESVILLE, N.C. — An internal complaint led to a police officer being arrested for child sex crimes.
Stephen Gordon, 22, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with statutory rape of a child under 15. Gordon was a police officer for the Statesville Police Department from October 2022 to November 2023, according to the department.
Officials say officers made an internal complaint about Gordon in November 2023, prompting an investigation into the situation.
Gordon was placed on administrative leave during the investigation. He resigned from the department on Nov. 29, 2023.
Police arrested Gordon on Tuesday. He is being held in Iredell County jail with no bond. Gordon's next court date is scheduled for Wednesday.
"The Statesville Police Department and the City of Statesville take allegations of misconduct and criminal activity very seriously," a Statesville spokesperson said in a statement. "We are committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining the trust of our community. As such, we will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing criminal investigation."
WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use the mugshot in this case because of the severity of the charges and Gordon's former position as a police officer.
