YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff's Office said four teens - one of them a juvenile - were responsible for crashing a stolen car during a chase that started in Charlotte on Tuesday.
Deputies said they were made aware that officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department had tried to stop four people inside a stolen 2021 Nissan Versa, but the car was headed south on I-77 at a high rate of speed. The sheriff's office was told the suspects were possibly armed and wanted in connection to a shooting into an occupied dwelling within CMPD's jurisdiction.
York County deputies set themselves up along the interstate to try and stop the Versa but said the driver did not yield and instead sped up to try and evade them. The chase continued as deputies said the driver got off I-77 and onto Porter Road. YCSO kept the chase up along with some units from the Rock Hill Police Department.
The driver of the Versa then exited back onto I-77, heading north this time, while more deputies joined the chase. Eventually, deputies said the Versa crashed near an off-ramp, ending the car chase.
After the crash, the sheriff's office said two suspects ran away from the scene while the other two were taken into custody then and there. The two suspects who ran away headed toward the nearby Courtyard by Marriott hotel, but were soon apprehended by deputies.
The four suspects were identified and charged as follows:
- 19-year-old Jabriel Halin Blakeney, charged with felony criminal conspiracy and possession of a stolen vehicle
- A 17-year-old juvenile male, charged with felony criminal conspiracy and possession of a stolen vehicle
- 19-year-old McKinley Hunt, charged with felony criminal conspiracy and possession of a stolen vehicle
- 19-year-old Richard Eugene Petty, charged with misdemeanor reckless driving, misdemeanor failure to stop for blue lights, felony criminal conspiracy, two counts of misdemeanor failure to stop for a school bus, and felony possession of a stolen vehicle
The three adult suspects were taken to the York County Detention Center and placed under a hold pending further investigation. The 17-year-old suspect was issued a juvenile complaint.
Deputies said the Versa was stolen out of Union County, North Carolina, and confirmed details with the Union County Sheriff's Office.
WCNC Charlotte has asked CMPD for more information about the case. As of publication, we have not yet heard back.
