Car break-ins at Belmont hotel linked to stolen car in I-85 chase

The suspects escaped into the woods after leading officers on a chase in Interstate 85 in Gaston County, Belmont police said.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Two suspects are on the loose after a series of vehicle break-ins and a high-speed chase on Interstate 85, Belmont police said.

Belmont Police responded to a call of a suspicious person at the Hampton Inn on Cecilia Alexander Drive around 2:45 a.m. Thursday. When the first officer arrived at the hotel, he spotted the truck with two men a 911 caller said were approaching multiple cars in the parking lot. As the officer approached the truck, the driver of the truck pulled out of the parking lot and sped away, according to detectives.

The driver allegedly refused to pull over when the officer tried to stop him. Multiple officers then showed up at the hotel and found two cars that were broken into. They also learned that the truck the suspects were in was reported stolen.

Officers later learned the suspects were entering Gaston County on southbound I-85. The officers began following the vehicle before the driver came to a stop just past the Hickory Grove Road bridge, investigators said. Two people jumped from the vehicle and ran into the woods. A K-9 unit was called to the area but officers were unable to find either suspect.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Belmont Police at 704-825-3792.
