Union County student arrested for making online threats to high school, officials say

A 15-year-old Sun Valley High School student made threats of violence on Instagram because he did not want to go to school.

MONROE, N.C. — A teen in Union County was arrested Tuesday for making a threat of violence against Sun Valley High School on social media.

Authorities were alerted to the threat, published in an Instagram post by an anonymous author, on Monday evening. After an extensive investigation into what was ultimately an unsubstantiated threat, the Union County Sheriff's Office School Safety Division identified the author of the post as a 15-year-old Sun Valley High student.

After questioning on Tuesday morning, the teenage suspect admitted that he posted the threat because he didn't want to go to school on Tuesday.
