Students feel unsafe after shooting near UNCC campus
A man was shot in the chest several times near UNCC Saturday.

CHARLOTTE – UNC Charlotte students are on edge after a shooting outside of an apartment complex near campus.

CMPD says a man was shot in the chest several times around 8:30 Saturday at the University House Apartment complex.

"It makes me feel nervous because I don't feel safe in my own home," UNC Charlotte student Taylor Adams said Sunday night.

Adams returned home after the holiday weekend to hear the news.

She says this isn't the first time she's felt unsafe living in these apartments.

"When I first got here my TV was stolen out of my apartment, as well as a couple people around me."

Several students tell NBC Charlotte there isn't enough security at the building, that there was a big police presence when it first opened, but now there are only a couple part-time security guards.

Adams says she's already made several complaints.

"I've talked to the manager and I know my roommates have as well, and I feel like they're trying to fix it, and that's why we have more security now and they have cameras I believe now, but yeah, I feel like that's something that should have been done from the beginning," Adams said.

NBC Charlotte tried to reach out to the management company for comment, but the office was closed.
Now residents are just hoping that nothing like this happens again.

"I feel like it's not something I should have to worry about as a student, because I'm already worried about grades and tuition and everything else -- it just shouldn't be a factor, my safety should not be a factor at all," Adams said.

CMPD hasn't released a motive for the shooting, and hasn't said whether officers have identified a suspect.
