YADKIN COUNTY, N.C. — A man wanted in connection with a Monday morning homicide in Iredell County was taken into custody in Yadkin County, deputies said.
The Iredell County Sheriff's Office said 23-year-old Pierson Worth Colbert was arrested during a traffic stop. He was in a truck that was stolen, officials said.
The homicide happened several hours earlier on Indian Hill Road around 5 a.m. Monday. Deputies said they found 44-year-old Robert John Quinn lying in the driveway with obvious wounds to his head. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the crime, deputies said witnesses described being awakened to a knock at their door. Witnesses said Colbert had told them he and the victim "had gotten into it really big this time," deputies reported.
According to officials, Colbert ran from the scene. A short time later, deputies said Colbert was accused of trying to gain entry into a home on Tublert Road.
Once deputies arrived at that scene, they spotted the suspect's vehicle. Authorities said the vehicle almost struck the deputy head-on.
Deputies said a few hours later, a caller reported a stolen vehicle. The suspect's original vehicle, a Nissan Sentra with paper containing his name, was found at that scene.
Deputies believed Colbert was driving a 1996 GMC Sonoma truck, dark green in color with a tag number of PCB-2545.
Detectives were able to obtain warrants on Colbert with murder and felony larceny of a motor vehicle.
On Tuesday, Colbert was also charged with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, misdemeanor attempted breaking and entering to a residence, misdemeanor larceny, and misdemeanor assault on a governmental official.
Colbert received no bond on the homicide and related charges. He was given $210,000 secured bond on some outstanding charges.
