2 suspects on the loose after police chase that went into South Carolina ends near Charlotte high school

One of the suspects was taken into custody after running from a stolen SUV, police said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two people are on the run after a police chase that went into South Carolina ended in southwest Charlotte on Tuesday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

CMPD says a license plate reader picked up a stolen vehicle around 10 a.m. Officers attempted to stop the driver, who refused to pull over and sped away. The officers did not pursue the suspect, saying the suspect hadn't committed a crime "categorized as dangerous to life."

CMPD's helicopter started following the vehicle, which drove onto Interstate 77 and into South Carolina. Investigators determined that three teens were inside the vehicle, which was chased by York County deputies until the teens got back to Charlotte.

The suspect continued to drive recklessly and hit at least one car near the entrance to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The driver jumped and ran from the vehicle in the area of Williams Glenn Road, not far from Olympic High School. Two other people inside the car also ran off, police said.

One suspect was located by pursuing officers and taken into custody. Two other suspects haven't been located. CMPD says there is no indication of an active threat to the community.

The incident comes one day after CMPD released its crime data for the first six months of 2024, noting a historic spike in crimes involving juveniles. The department said 61% of those crimes were committed by repeat offenders.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. All calls to Crime Stoppers are anonymous.
