Troopers search for driver involved in hit-and-run that killed cyclist

It happened on U.S 221 near Grandfather Mountain on Thursday. State troopers said the minivan crossed the double yellow line on a curve and hit the victim head-on.

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Highway Patrol were searching for the driver of a minivan who caused a serious accident involving a cyclist in Caldwell County.

It happened on U.S 221 near Grandfather Mountain late Thursday morning. State troopers said the minivan crossed the double yellow line on a curve and hit the victim head-on. 

Ignacio Giraldo, 61, of Sunrise, Florida, was flown to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee in critical condition. Highway Patrol said he had been cycling with his daughter and two other people.

Giraldo died Saturday, officials confirm. NCSHP is continuing to investigate.

State troopers were looking for a charcoal gray 2005-2010 Toyota Sienna that may have damage to the right front, headlight, and/or right front fender.
