CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two people were arrested and charged this week after separate incidents of trespassing with firearms on UNC Charlotte's campus, police say.
The first incident happened Saturday, Feb. 24 shortly before 9 p.m. An officer noticed that a door was being propped open to the common area and smelled marijuana on two people in the area.
After checking their IDs, the officer verified that neither person had any affiliation with the university. The officer asked if they had any weapons or drugs on them. One person said he had something "legal" in his pocket, while the other person ran away.
The officer found a gun on the first person, along with two loaded magazines. He was arrested for felony possession of a firearm on education property and taken to Mecklenburg County detention center.
Officers searched the surrounding area and could not locate the second person. A warrant for second-degree trespassing was completed. The person already has an active trespass warrant.
A separate incident happened when a woman was found trespassing with a firearm on Monday, Feb. 25 around 7:30 a.m.
University police dispatch received a call about a woman sleeping in the lounge of Miltimore Hall. Police confirmed that she had a trespass order already on file. The woman was arrested for 2nd degree trespassing.
After a search, police also found that she had a gun in her possession.
