CMPD identifies victim, suspect in northwest Charlotte homicide

The victim was found dead after being run over along Brookshire Boulevard, but detectives say it wasn't the car that killed him.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges, including murder, in connection with the killing of a man in northwest Charlotte in late March, detectives announced Tuesday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a reported hit-and-run along Brookshire Boulevard near Interstate 85 around 2 a.m. on March 22. When officers arrived, they found 44-year-old David McNeil lying in the road after he'd been hit by a car. McNeil was pronounced dead at the scene.

CMPD determined that McNeil had been "mortally wounded" before he collapsed on the road and was run over by oncoming traffic. Detectives said his injuries weren't consistent with those of someone who was hit by a vehicle.

Detectives identified 27-year-old Divee Cunningham as the suspect in the case and got warrants for his arrest on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Cunningham was arrested on June 20.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information about this case or any other incident is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Witnesses may also call 704-432-TIPS to speak directly with homicide detectives. All calls to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
