WINGATE, N.C. — Wingate University's main campus was under a brief lockdown Friday night after a student was attacked with a knife, a campus spokesperson said.
Shortly after 8 p.m., the campus was put on lockdown for about 45 minutes after a student was cut on the hand with a knife in an attack.
The student was able to run away from the attacker. Wingate Police assisted Union County Sheriff's Office deputies in locating and arresting the person who fit the attacker's description. The alleged attacker's identity is unknown, but the person is not a student.
The student who was attacked suffered minor injuries and is receiving assistance from campus staff.
Over the weekend, there will be increased patrols by Campus Safety and local law enforcement.
