YORK, S.C. — A teen is in custody and accused of killing a man in a South Carolina city earlier in May.
On Tuesday, the 16th Circuit Solicitor's Office confirmed to WCNC Charlotte a 15-year-old was charged with one count of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder. A detention hearing is likely within the next week.
The suspect is accused of killing 21-year-old Jai'Shaun Young of Gastonia, North Carolina in what the York Police Department has described as the city's first homicide investigation since 2022. Young was found shot to death inside a home along Galilean Road on May 6, 2024.
WCNC Charlotte reporter Austin Walker spoke to Young's parents in the aftermath of the tragedy. Young's mother, Shauna Burger, said her son's friends called her and told her what was going on. Since losing Young, Burger said she's still trying to catch her breath.
"I feel like I’ve had so many panic attacks," she said. "It’s like I can't breathe. That was my biggest fear to bury one of my kids.”
Young's father, Shon, also said the only visits he'd ever have with his son now would be at a graveside, while the person responsible would get visits separated only by the window of a prison visitation area.
Shauna Burger began a GoFundMe to help pay for the cost of burying her son. Anyone who wishes to donate can do so at this link.
