VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Virginia Aquarium officials say a dead whale that washed up in Virginia Beach likely died from a collision with a boat.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the dead minke whale washed up near the Dam Neck Annex to Oceana Naval Air Station on Wednesday morning.
The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team says a necropsy revealed broken ribs, which is an injury consistent with a vessel encounter.
The female whale that measured about 14 feet long showed signs of entanglement but those wounds were healing.
The Navy will bury the whale on the beach.
