CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A driver was charged in a west Charlotte crash that killed one person and hurt two others.
It happened around 7:00 p.m. Monday on Little Rock Road at I-85. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Adelbert Kevin Redo was driving north on I-85 when a trooper pulled him over for speeding.
CMPD said Redo resisted arrest, got back in his car, took off and started to drag the trooper, who did not engage in a pursuit.
CMPD told NBC Charlotte Redo then exited at Little Rock Road at a high rate of speed, lost control of his vehicle and went airborne. Investigators told NBC Charlotte when the car landed, it hit three other vehicles.
After the crash, CMPD said Redo ran away but was later caught by an off-duty state trooper who saw the accident. Redo was believed to be under the influence.
Medic took three people from one car to the hospital. One died in route, 45-year-old Teresa Villanueva Ortuno. The driver and passengers in the the other vehicles were not hurt.
Redo will be charged with Second Degree Murder, Felony Hit and Run, 2 counts of Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle, Driving While Impaired, and Reckless Driving.
The crash remains under investigation.
