Rider on 4-wheeler shot, killed after deputies say they ran over two people in Burke County

Deputies said the person on the 4-wheeler ran over two people while riding on another's property. The suspect is in custody.

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Two people were struck by somebody riding a 4-wheeler on another's property, according to the Burke County Sheriff's Office. BCSO said a third person reportedly fired multiple shots at the person riding the 4-wheeler, and officials say some of the shots struck the rider.

The call came in just before 2 a.m. on July 22. The incident was in the 4000 block of Old NC 18 in Connelly Springs

Deputies and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene, but officials say the rider of the 4-wheeler died shortly after their arrival.  

BCSO has charged Andrew Carlos Smith, 28, of Morganton for the murder of Lawrence Ervin McGee, 47. 

Smith appeared before a Burke County Magistrate, held with no bond. He is being held at Burke-Catawba District Confinement Facility, and is expected to be in court on July 24. 

According to deputies, someone fired multiple shots at the person riding the 4-wheeler with some of the shots striking the rider. 

Deputies and medical personnel were dispatched and the 4-wheeler rider died shortly after their arrival. 

Burke County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigators (CID) are currently on the scene being assisted by the NC SBI with the investigation.
