BOONE, N.C. — In a message to students sent out Tuesday, Appalachian State University Interim Chancellor Heather Norris announced that classes will resume on Oct. 16.
App State students haven't been in class since the Thursday before Hurricane Helene swept across western North Carolina, causing devastating damage across the mountains.
Appalachian State said last week that some buildings on campus suffered damage from the storm. The university kept residence halls open, as well as the central dining hall to accommodate students who were unable to leave the area in the aftermath of the storm.
The return to class on October 16 comes at the end of what would have been Fall Break for Appalachian State students. The decision to return to class was made during a meeting between the university and leaders from Watauga County, the Town of Boone and the Boone Chamber of Commerce.
There are still over 3,000 people in Watauga County without power as a result of Helene. Across the state, the total number without power has finally dropped below 100,000.
