CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — State leaders approved tens of millions of dollars for Cabarrus County Schools to make upgrades at numerous campuses across the district.
The North Carolina Local Government Commission tabled a discussion on approving funding for a new elementary school in Cabarrus County until February's meeting due to not having the final maximum price contracts available at this time. Those contracts are expected to be available in December and January, with the LGC staff recommending approval once the final prices are provided.
Nearly 300 students have been added to Cabarrus County classrooms since the end of last school year, and accommodating that growth with a new elementary school has been on the district’s agenda.
The LGC approved funding a $73 million request from Cabarrus County. The application would cover nine total projects, including numerous school upgrades, a public library and a senior living center in the Afton Ridge community.
The projects include an addition to Fred L. Wilson Elementary School, HVAC replacements at Concord High School, Forest Park Elementary School, Weddington Hills Elementary School, and RCCC South Campus, roof replacements at Hickory Ridge High School, Cox Mill Elementary School, and Wolf Meadow Elementary School and a public library and active living center at Afton Ridge.
A second application for three projects worth $78 million would include $52 million allocated toward a replacement school for Coltrane-Webb Elementary School and Beverly Hills Elementary School.
The Department of State Treasurer said the $78 million application's approval was unlikely due to a lack of documentation needed to move the funding forward. That's why the commission opted to hear the issue again in February, once documentation is provided by Cabarrus County officials.
