CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A west Charlotte magnet school reopened Wednesday after a burst pipe flooded the building and caused significant damage before the start of the school year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced.
The Charles Parker Academic Center sustained severe flooding and water damage when a pipe burst in August, district leaders said. Students were temporarily relocated to Bruns Avenue Elementary School to start the year. Charles Parker Academic Center reopened Wednesday for students and staff.
Students had a remote learning day on Tuesday to give staff time to prepare classrooms for students. The children were given remote learning packets for reading, math, science and social studies. The school services kindergarten through fifth grade.
In 2021, the school was renamed after Charles Parker, a former slave who became a visionary leader of Charlotte's Black community in the area that is now West Boulevard. Parker led the fraternal group that built the historic Plato Price School.
