CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte teacher was surprised with the prestigious Milken Educator Award for creative instruction and exceptional leadership.
The Milken Educator Award, often called the "Oscar of Teaching," is always given to the recipient as a complete surprise. Vanessa Smith, a first-grade teacher at Croft Community School in north Charlotte, was presented the award during an assembly on Wednesday.
Smith had no idea she'd be given the top honor when she arrived at school Wednesday, telling WCNC Charlotte it was a stunning moment.
"I was in complete shock," she said. "I was not expecting to hear my name. I was excited to hear the name of whoever won, but that was an awesome moment. Humbled to say the least, but definitely nerve-wracking."
Along with the award, Smith will receive a $25,000 cash prize.
“Vanessa Smith’s dedication and creativity shine in every lesson as she guides her first-graders through engaging, thought-provoking learning activities that provide students with a solid foundation for their educational journeys,” Stephanie Bishop, the device president of the Milken Educator Awards, said. “Her innovative teaching, exceptional leadership and passion for nurturing students’ academic and personal growth are some of the ways she embodies a Milken Educator. I am pleased to welcome her to our national network."
The Milken Educator Awards were founded by philanthropist and education visionary Lowel Milken as a way to recognize exceptional teachers for their dedication to excellence in education and leadership. The 2024-25 Milken Awards tour will recognize 45 pioneering teachers from across the country.
