CMS says big changes coming to district leadership structure

The change in leadership configuration is meant to better manage the schools within CMS and improve efficiency.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Top leadership at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will see some key changes for the 2024-25 school year.

In a news release Friday, the district announced plans to re-work the current leadership configuration, transitioning into a new model it promises will help ensure student success. The key difference is that district leadership will pivot from managing nine unique learning communities to overseeing schools based on education levels.

This means, per the district's announcement, that leaders will be designated to manage elementary, middle, high, and Pre-K-8 schools. CMS claims this will maintain a focused approach on education models tailored to each grade level across its 186 schools.

"Our new organizational excellence model supports and reinforces the culture we want, while delivering on the goals and staying within the guardrails adopted by the Board of Education," said Superintendent Crystal Hill, who will also be guiding the transition with the district's senior leadership team.

The new organizational model promises to be more efficient by removing "multiple connectors" to solve problems, provided needed support services to schools, focus on contextualized support for school leaders, emphasize accountability and collaboration; and address staffing challenges, namely teacher recruitment.

Most of the changes will take effect July 1, 2024. CMS leadership will conduct interviews for positions that will be posted on the district's career web pages. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.
