Rezoning could impact where thousands of CMS students go to school

The rezoning will primarily affect middle and early colleges, potentially impacting thousands of Charlotte students.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Crystal Hill said the district will conduct a comprehensive review that could change how students are assigned to magnet schools.

Hill revealed the review during Tuesday night's board meeting. It will primarily affect middle and early colleges in the CMS district, potentially impacting thousands of students. The reassignments are part of a three-phase project.

Some schools, like Northwest School of the Arts, will reduce its student body, while others will take on more students. The plan calls for Northwest to become a high school, with middle school students moving to First Ward Creative Arts Academy.

According to CMS, some of these reassignments are directly tied to the $2.5 billion bond package that passed last year, with some schools getting bigger and new ones getting built.

The CMS Board of Education is holding a public hearing about the review on Aug. 27. Parents are invited to attend that meeting and give their feedback. A final vote on the proposal is scheduled for Sept. 10.
