MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has switched supplemental e-book platforms in order to adhere to Senate Bill 49.
According to the bill, all instructional resources for students in Kindergarten through fourth grade must not teach about sexual activity, gender identity, or sexuality. This includes supplemental resources such as the EPIC e-book app that some elementary teachers were using.
WCNC Charlotte received a statement from Melissa Balknight, the Deputy Superintendent for CMS about the district's switch away from EPIC.
According to the statement, CMS recently learned that some books on the EPIC platform are in violation SB 49, and, because CMS is not able to monitor access to books on the app, district leaders made the decision to remove access to the app during the school day.
Parents and families are still able to purchase an EPIC subscription outside to use outside of school hours.
