CMS standardizing pay for teachers who take on extra responsibilities like advising clubs

This is in an effort to ensure equity in pay district-wide, according to the district.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district is standardizing how much it pays teachers, facilitators and employees in other certified exempt positions for taking on extra responsibilities.

This is in an effort to ensure equity in pay across the district, though it does not apply to athletics.

These stipends also don't apply for any activity where the employee already gets extended employment pay. Principals, assistant principals, TAs, and other non-exempt staff are all ineligible for the stipends.

The stipends range from $200 to teachers who advise clubs to $2,000 for drama, theater and musical directors. Student government advisors are allocated a $1,000 stipend at a traditional high school under the plan, and academic club sponsors are allocated $500 stipends.

Teachers are not allowed to be paid more than the allocated stipends by parent associations or booster clubs.

School principals have to submit their plans for using the funds within the school budget by Aug. 30. Principals are able to increase or decrease how many stipends each area is allocated, so long as the actual stipend amounts stay the same and the total cost doesn't go over the school's budget.

Principals are required to submit any requests for payment by April 1, 2025, then the stipends are paid at the end of the school year, according to the district.

The process will be re-evaluated next spring.
