Over half of Black single moms have considered changing their kids' school, nonprofit says

The nonprofit the 74 says over half of single Black mothers have considered changing their kids' school in the past year.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new poll found that the majority of Black mothers are concerned about their child's academic progress.

This survey led to a report in Forbes that broke down the history between Black parents and educational freedom. It comes a few months after WCNC Charlotte reported that over 60% of Black students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools were testing below grade-level in reading compared to 24% of white students.

The achievement gaps between Black and white students in classrooms in the Charlotte area are similar to the gaps seen statewide and nationally. According to Forbes, some of the disparities are pushing Black parents to try and break from public schools, or at least finding a new school for their kids.

Citing a nonprofit called the 74, the article goes on to say 56% of Black single moms have considered changing their children's schools in the last year alone.
