Gaston County students return for first day of school on Wednesday

More than 30K head back to class for the first day of school

GASTONIA, N.C. — More than 30,000 students had their first day of school today in the Gaston County Schools district.

As dozens of cars and SUVs pulled up to the sidewalk of Robinson Elementary, each student was greeted by a teacher or staff member -- and many were greeted by the superintendent himself, Morgen Houchard.

“This is an exciting day,” he said, “We love what we do.”

A school mascot joined teachers and staff members ushering students into the single-story building. You could see smiles, hugs, and a few tears on the faces of little ones as they arrived Wednesday morning.

Some greeted teachers by name, others smiled and waved at their instructors.

“The toughest thing about today was getting them up and ready,” said Yolanda, who has two children who attend Robinson Elementary. “They are in fourth and third grades, and I like it here.”

Houchard, who became superintendent in February, is entering his first full year at the helm of the district after being part of the district for eight years.

He said while there is still the need for more teachers and staff, they are in great shape.

“We have some openings, but are levels are the lowest they’ve been in five years," Houchard said.

The Gaston County School Districts has 56 campuses.
