Local technical college offers free vital services to help struggling students succeed

York Technical College launched two new services on Monday that offer free food, professional clothing, and child care to its students.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — York Technical College on Monday launched a food pantry, clothing closet and free child care for students in need.

The new programs seek solutions to common barriers students face when trying to get an education.

"We are here as a campus to make sure you’re doing well for your entire success, not only just academically, but your well-being," Nikita Baxter, the director of York Tech's student life, said.

She helps run the newly opened Wolf’s Den, which is a classroom that's been converted into a free food pantry and professional clothing closet.

York Tech students are allowed to use the Wolf's Den services twice a month.

Student Angelo Allison applauded the free service, saying he knows what it’s like to need a little help sometimes.

"I was in between jobs and kind of struggling paycheck to paycheck, and I actually came here myself and picked up a couple things," Allison shared while visiting the Wolf's Den.

York Tech’s student life survey found more than 200 students battle food insecurity a month. College president Stacey Moore said many students also struggle to find child care.

"It comes up all the time, constantly," Moore told WCNC Charlotte. "Students have to drop classes or leave school in the middle of the semester because they don't have child care, can’t afford child care."

On the same day the school fully launched the food pantry and closet, it also celebrated the opening of its First Steps 4K program at its child development center.

The center already provides daycare services and now the 4K program will allow the school to offer free full time child care to eligible students.

"Students apply for scholarships through the state, through DSS, and that's how they fund the child care costs," Moore explained.

Child care, food and clothing are three essentials many students need to succeed. York Tech is now focusing on those issues, so its students can focus on school.

"It's pretty heartwarming to know that the school cares too," Allison said.

York Technical College has a website dedicated to the Wolf's Den's services, including directions on how to donate. It also has more information online about its childcare services for students.
