DALLAS, North Carolina — NC House Speaker Tim Moore and other state representatives traveled to Gaston College to present the school with a check for $60 million.
The state-level funding will go toward a Health Science Education and Simulation Center facility geared toward training opportunities for new and existing healthcare personnel.
Moore's visit comes amid the recent announcement of the Cleveland County Republican's bid for Congress.
Moore was joined by State Representatives Donnie Loftis, Kelly Hastings, Jason Saine and John Torbett.
State Senators Ted Alexander and Brad Overcash also attended the event, which was held at the Gaston College Myers Center Auditorium in Dallas, North Carolina.
“This will be the only regional facility open to industry that is capable of providing training opportunities to existing healthcare professionals as well as students through a full range of in-house simulation capabilities,” said Gaston College President Dr. John Hauser in a press release announcing the facility last month.
This funding is the largest community college budget allocation so far this year.
The school said the establishment of this facility could help address the estimated 700 job openings in healthcare in the area.
It is also expected to help boost the healthcare industry in the region, overall.
“Not only will our students develop necessary skills in this facility, but current healthcare workers can come to retool skills, work to advance their position, acquire certifications, and more,” Hauser said.
