Rock Hill Schools looking at options for mental health therapists for students

The district cited a lack of funding as a factor.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill Schools confirmed with WCNC Charlotte the district is exploring options regarding in-school mental health therapists at the end of 2024.

In a statement, the district said a lack of funding is a factor, but another solution is in the works.

"Where we stand in an anticipated budget shortfall next fiscal year, we have to explore sustainable ways to ensure these services will continue to be provided for our children," the district partly said in its statement.

Parents, however, say they’re worried.

“It would be a good idea to keep them there because it helps the students when the parents aren’t there or don’t have time for them,” said neighbor Denise Aikens.

Another resident, Brandee Britton, shared her fears for the students.

“I’m terrified for them. I would hate to see them take extreme degrees because they don’t know where else to go or what else to do,” she said. “They can cut back somewhere else. Not trying to take away from sports or athletics or things like that or academics. I feel that they can make an allowance for something like that."

WCNC Charlotte asked the district if layoffs should be expected as a result of the budget deficit. A spokesperson said that “nothing has been finalized.”
