Concord police identify students responsible for distributing THC edibles that sent seven students to hospital

A parent sent WCNC Charlotte photos that showed first responders inside C.C. Griffin Middle School after students complain of "negative reaction" to eating treats.

CONCORD, N.C. — The Concord Police Department has identified two students responsible for selling THC edibles to students at C.C. Griffin Middle School on Friday, which led to seven students being taken to the hospital for having "negative reactions to ingesting an unknown substance."

WCNC Charlotte was first told by a parent that several ambulances were summoned to C.C. Griffin Middle School after they ate something.   She also shared a photo from inside the school.

In a statement released Monday, Concord police stated that they found rice krispy treats at the school that some students ate, which tested positive for THC.

After interviewing several students, police say that the students had planned to buy and consume the THC edibles ahead of time. Some students also told police that they consumed psilocybin mushrooms.

The statement added that all students admitted to eating the edibles knowingly.

Heather Serrano and Melissa Morphis, whose children attend C.C. Griffin, both told WCNC Charlotte they were upset to find out what happened. They were no informed by the school about the incident, but they found out from their kids.

“That’s absolutely ridiculous,” Morphis said.

Serrano’s daughter, Evelyn, said she noticed something wrong with her friends after she said they had eaten a treat. Evelyn claims they got it from another student.

“We were sitting at lunch, and I noticed my friends were acting a little weird,” she said.  “They started getting really paranoid and really jittery and everything. So, I said 'relax.'"

Serrano and Morphis said they found out about what happened through their kids.

“This is my child so, if you are taking her in an ambulance and she’s sick, you better call me,” said Serrano.
